The Alitash Kebede Gallery presents exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and offers a selection of 20th century masterworks for sale. The gallery specializes in the work of artists from the African Diaspora and devotes a section to photographic works. After working as a private dealer for 10 years, Alitash Kebede opened the gallery in 1994. Among its first clients were the Nobel Prize winning author Toni Morrison, the Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington, the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Charles Fuller, the CEO of Burrell Communications (then Burrell Advertising), Tom Burrell, and other lesser known but equally notable collectors who helped to sustain it and grow its reputation. Throughout its history, it has earned a reputation for being a source for first time and seasoned collectors, as well as a supporter of artists working in a variety of media. The gallery presented the first solo exhibitions in Los Angeles of numerous New York artists such as Al Loving, Ed Clark, Emilio Cruz, Herbert Gentry, Richard Mayhew and Nanette Carter, among others, and provided the first professional studio space for the young celebrated artist Kehinde Wiley, following his residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2002. Author Terry McMillan had her first book signing for her debut novel Mama at the gallery in 1987, and later the gallery provided art for the movie based on McMillan’s novel, Stella Got Her Groove Back. The gallery offers collections management services for corporate and private collections, and through a partnership with Landau Traveling Exhibitions, organizes a number of exhibitions that travel to museums throughout the United States and abroad. Alitash Kebede Gallery is located in the landmark ART 170 building. Built in 1938, the building was remodeled in the early 80’s by prominent Los Angeles architect Coy Howard.
